I created this website to review PirateBay.com and ThePirateBay.org and help you make an informed decision about which service to use. These two services share very little in common except a similar name. So, to help you avoid spending money unnecessarily or possibly choosing the wrong service, I've created descriptions of each service below... I hope it helps.
The Pirate BayThe Pirate Bay is probably the largest and most well known bittorrent tracker.
Basically that means you can search through a large database of files that you can download using bittorrent client software. Bittorrent trackers such as The Pirate Bay don't actually host large files but they do allow you to download a small file (tracker) that allows you to connect to other people who do have those files.
A torrent is a file that is broken into main pieces. That way when you start downloading a large file you may be downloading one small piece from one person and other pieces of the file from several other people. If one of the people decides to disconnect, no problem, you will just continue the download from someone else.
That is the basic idea. So The Pirate Bay lets you find files and helps you connect to others. In order to actually download the file, however, you need a certain type of software called a torrent client such as uTorrent.
The torrent format can be used to exchange almost any type of file but be careful because many torrent files can be illegal copies of commercial or copyrighted software. Also many files contain viruses or malware. I am definitely not condoning the downloading of illegal software. You could get yourself in to trouble so be warned.
Pirate BayPirate Bay is a much different service than The Pirate Bay. This can be very confusing and you may accidently signup with Pirate Bay by mistake, if you're not paying attention. Pirate Bay uses a similar color scheme as The Pirate Bay, they use a pirate ship in thier logo just like The Pirate Bay and the text on their home page is all about searching and downloading movies and files. If you didn't know better, you could easily mistake them for... you guessed it... The Pirate Bay. They even named their page titles ThePirateBay.com, which is actually one of The Pirate Bay's web addresses, not theirs... hmmm.
Could it be they are trying to make us think they are the famous torrent tracker described above? I'll leave that for you to decide.
So, what exactly is Pirate Bay (.com)? Well, that took me a little while to figure out too. It turns out they are not a service for searching torrent files. In fact all they do is sell you a membership subscription for support ($44.99). Support you say? Support for what...torrent files? Nope. Support for free software that you can go and download yourself.
Can you imagine paying a $44.99 membership fee, then getting redirected to a different website called BuyPremiumTech.com and being presented with a list of links to free software on other sites such as iTunes, WinRar, CCleaner Anti Virus, etc. What is the membership fee for? Support for these free products. Hmmm well it seems to me all these companies already provide support for their software. Why am I paying these guys for it?
Please be careful. If you are looking to search for torrent files do not sign up for this service. If you want to pay good money for some kind of support for free software that you can go and download yourself, well, I don't know what to tell you other than buyer beware.
I hope this review was helpful to you :)
